We were feeling good – well-rested for the most part and our bellies full of delicious/cheap breakfast! Route 20 was a really lovely highway through some really rural places in Ohio. We passed through farming town centers no bigger than a couple of blocks, the cutest one being Maumee; a tiny town with a roundabout at its heart, flanked by a hardware store, city hall, a library and an archaic (yet lovely) movie theater marquee proudly displaying that Harry Potter 6 tickets were a mere $5.00. We saw tons and tons of farms and teenagers on riding mowers and silos. I thought Ohio was pretty cute.

Then came Indiana. For the most part, I thought northeastern Indiana was a snoozefest, even the farms were a little less pretty than those in Ohio. And then it rained while I was driving – grr. And then we accidentally took a detour to Michigan (thanks, Jus) that added an extra hour or so to our itinerary. And then we saw this on the horizon…

The first day was jam-packed with last minute packing snafus, late starts and insane New York City traffic. We didn’t get officially on the road and out of the city until an astonishing 4pm, but neither of us let that dampen our high spirits – the trip had finally begun!

Yes, yes… there’s been a patented Laurie absence and I’m deeply apologetic! But there have been lots of changes in la vie de moi.. Firstly, I turned 27 and, with the help of many, many Tequila shots, managed to have a lovely time. My dear friend (and former roomie… tear…) liveblogged my birthday over at her digital digs, KV Knows Her Fun.

Secondly, I finally embarked upon my westerly exodus (god i love saying that) and changed my residence from hardened, lifelong Atlantic dweller to easy, breezy Pacific girl. My little brother and I managed to make it all the way across this crazy nation in a Budget box truck over the course of 9 days WITHOUT getting lynched OR kiling one another. And now, I am a happy resident of San Francisco, California.

As promised, I documented my travels by photographing the patron saint of Adult Swim geeks, Space Ghost, from coast to coast. You can check out his journey at the tumblr I dedicated to the project – Population: Space Ghost.

Now that I’ve had a little time to decompress from all that packing and unpacking and driving and spending money, I’m feeling inspired to blog once again! In the coming days/weeks, I plan on laying out a photographically detailed run-down of the Big Trip. I met a nuclear reactor along the Great Lakes, discovered that I love hiking and hate Nebraska in the same day, practically melted in Utah and had many other adventures! Here’s a little taste of how excited I was to be in Gabbs, Nevada:

Back in a flash with more deets!

I’ve been a little absent, due to my preoccupation with packing and readying myself for the big journey westward… and it’s begun! I’m currently sitting in a tiny hotel room in Ohio, dreaming of starry skies and sandstone arches and Gabbs, Nevada. All in good time!

I’m probably not going to get to many outfit piccies/posts anytime soon because of the traveling, but please feel free to check out my new travel project, Population: Space Ghost! I’m basically expounding upon Adult Swim’s show, Space Ghost: Coast to Coast by actually taking (and photographing) Space Ghost from coast to coast. Wee!

Here’s the last picture I took on my way out of New York:

See you later, New York!

Once we had our apartment sorted, I had lots of free time to explore my future city. I cannot wait to live here:

In preparation for The Big Move that will be going down in a matter of mere weeks, Nina and I made (what was initially intended to be) a quick trip to San Francisco to visit Spencer and lock down a lease on a new apartment.

The first day of real estate hunting was hopeful and surprisingly smooth; we saw 5 apartments in the span of an hour and a half. We adored Hayes Valley and found a 1-bedroom we loved as well as two possible backups. Two days of anxious waiting later, we learned, much to our chagrin, that our first choice was snapped up by a pending applicant. We went to see a few more places. Another two days of waiting, plus an extra week added to my trip, and we learned that every apartment we had even remotely considered was no longer available.

Disheartened by this unexpectedly difficult experience, I made one last attempt and lo and behold, we found it! A lovely one bedroom with a huge walk-in closet, big open kitchen, big bathroom, hardwood floors and lots of natural light! It’s so centrally located, it’s ridiculous – it takes about 20 minutes to get anywhere in the city, including the beach. I couldn’t be happier and can’t wait to call this my new home!

With my family, Memorial Day has always meant meat and barbecue. This year, Memorial Day meant fishing on the Chesapeake Bay.

The other day, my little brother was nice enough to drive up here to New York to help me move a couple of things back to my mom’s house in DC. He decided to hang out up here for a night so we had a lovely afternoon of Wii Sports and a fabulous, FABULOUS bbq dinner at Fette Sau, one of my favorite bbq joints in Brooklyn. We all passed out with meat sweats pretty early so Justin and I could get out on the road as early as possible.

Flash forward 6 hours… we successfully woke up early, got gas and were on our way to DC by 6:30am… huzzah! Pumped ourselves full of caffeine and mini donuts and things were smooth and boring all the way to Delaware. We had just gotten past the Delaware bridge, when I spotted something bright and oddly shaped on the rode up ahead of us. Justin accelerated (to the best of his 25-year-old, band-aid colored pick-up truck’s ability) and screeched, “OMG! THE OSCAR MAYER WIENERMOBILE!!!”

That’s right, we were neck and neck with the Wienermobile on I-95 at 10 am on a Friday. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity as neither of us had ever seen this vision of plastic hot dog splendor in real life before. Seriously, this changed our lives:
