Two rad things have happened lately…

1. I finally bunkered down and purchased that new lens I’ve been salivating over forever – Canon 85mm f 1.8… utterly droolworthy.

2.I’ve been growing my hair out for the past few months and I’m pleased to report that it can basically be considered long now. Woot!

Also, here’s what  I wore today:

Today was the first beautiful, appropriately summery day we’ve had in quite some time… and I spent most of it indoors, of course (planning something VERY exciting, which I will divulge soon). But when I did venture out, this is what I wore… comfortable, breathable, with dancing shoes:

You know how people say girls usually end up like their mothers? Well it’s happened to me. There have always been photographic glimpses into this inevitable future – an expression here, a hairstyle there. But the other day, I unwittingly channeled my mother circa 1974, except I’m a few inches taller and she had a lot more ‘tude…

Paul Smith is having their annual Friends & Family sample sale; this is cause for much merriment. It runs for two glorious, discount-filled days and let me tell you… it’s been amazing! As soon as I walked in, I was blown away by rack after rack of fabulous garments from this great English designer. So many colors and textures and the shoes… oh God… the shoes.

I scored a pretty sweet haul, mostly accessories and this lovely, lovely bandeau bathing suit that I seriously coveted last year. Here’s the first run – this great floppy straw hat and a very intensely yellow belt! When paired with my T by Alexander Wang dress, I totally feel like a spy, a woman of mystery, if you will.

The other day, I stumbled across this beautiful vintage housedress at Housing Works. I haven’t worn it out yet due to it (apparently) being monsoon season in New York, but I thought at the very least I could have a little photoshoot today. I planned out what I wanted to do, set up the tripod and everything like usual, released the shutter and…

Err 99, shooting is not possible. Turn the power switch to OFF and ON again or re-install the battery.

WTF??!?!!

I did what this stupid error message suggested and… nothing.

I read lord knows how many forums and troubleshooting threads about this dreaded catch-all error, tried all the DIY fix-its and… nothing.

AAARRGH! What’s a shutter-happy girl to do?

I did some tests and my humble opinion is that there’s something wrong with the mirror lockup, the mirror gets stuck or something. I’m not able to take any pictures at all unless I use the Live View function. At first, whenever I took pictures in Live View, there would be a reflection from the mirror along the bottom edge of the frame. Now, after a few more shots, that reflection is gone, but I’m still unable to take any photos outside of Live View! Has anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions outside of sending it to Canon? I’m still within warranty time, but I can’t for the life of me find that stupid warranty card!

Yeah, so my camera is on the fritz and I’m super unhappy about that, but I did manage to take a couple photos of my new dress! I promise to post some better, more inspired ones once I get this camera bidness sorted out!

Lately, I’ve had the travel itch… the urge to just pick up and go somewhere else. I haven’t been out of the country in months and I’d very much like to rectify that situation ASAP. While I’m figuring out if I have the time (and financial means) to do so, perhaps I’ll just live out my travel fantasies through clothing purchased outside of the country, starting with the following…

I got this lovely dress on a whirlwind weekend trip to Montreal a couple years ago. Spencer and I were both a little strapped for cash, so we spent most of the time walking, taking pictures and indulging in amazing culinary delights rather than shopping. But of course, I couldn’t entirely abstain, so I made just one clothing purchase from a little shop called Lustre. The girls who run it were so helpful and completely sweet – it was easy to spend my hard earned dosh! I instantly fell in love with the subtle, uber-flattering purples. I put it on and pranced around the store for a few minutes, occasionally stopping to admire my reflection. After  a couple of twirls, I turned to Spencer and noted that the only thing that could make this garment more perfect would be the addition of pockets. And right at the moment, my hands instantly moved to where pockets should be, and lo and behold… there were hidden pockets! I bought it on the spot.

And now, after two years of living in one of the fashion capitals of the world, it still remains one of my favorite, most comfortable dresses.

A deserted beach is possibly the best alternative to mood-elevators I can think of. Spencer had the day off yesterday, so we decided to take advantage of our time together and have ourselves a little mini-vacay. After a long (and unbelievably fun) weekend, I figured we were both in need of a little nature detox, so we piled into a ZipCar and headed out for an adventure.

Seeing as how it’s been unseasonably warm the past few days, going to the beach was basically a no-brainer. But which beach? It had to be somewhere at least slightly remote. It had to be dog-friendly. It had to be clean. Those criteria took us to Fort Tilden, an abandoned military base/nature preserve near the western tip of the Rockaways.

The sky was clear, azure blue and the temperature hovered around 80 F. Giant birds of prey swooped down at the sea to scoop up clams and crabs. I spotted approximately 12 people during the six hours we spent there (two of them, naked). It was exactly what I needed!

Dear Fort Tilden, I love you. Love, Laurie…

Yet another rainy Monday, yet another dress up day!

This time… white light and electric colors:

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned, I generally don’t wear all that many prints. It didn’t begin as a conscious decision, I just kind of fell into it. My style has evolved over the years and I think, at least as it pertains to work attire, I’ve established a pretty minimalistic aesthetic.

And it is because of this subconsciously-imposed minimalism that I absolutely adore the following dress. It is one of maybe a handful of garments in my closet that has a strong, all-over pattern. I love the bright blue and the way it enlivens the abstract ikat-like design. I also love how it subtly references the 70s – whenever I wear it, I feel like I should be serving drinks and asking my party guests if they’d like to add their keys to the bowl.
